Chapter Seven

Emissaries of Progress

Meanwhile, Amaria was in her dressing gown, seated by Lilian at breakfast. As they ate, a knock came on her door. Lilian went to answer.

“My Lady sent for us?” the voices of Tayree and Josemy could be heard, and Lilian stepped aside to let them in.

“Come in, my friends,” Amaria greeted them.

“You wanted to see us?” Josemy bowed.

“Yes. Please excuse my attire, but time was of the essence.” She motioned them to seats, and when they were comfortable with sweets in their hands, she sent Lilian on an errand. Then she started talking to the elfs.

“I had an idea, last night while I slept, and I wanted to present it to you. I would appreciate it if you would listen and tell me if it is possible for this to be accomplished.”

“We will do our best,” Tayree answered and sent a glance at Josemy for confirmation.

“The parchment from your council said that if I need help, please ask.”

“Yes, and it is the whole truth,” Josemy affirmed.

“I need help … can you help me?”

“In anything you may need and we can provide, My Lady,” said Tayree.

“I wonder if your people would allow some of my people to go and live with them for awhile?”

“It would depend on the reason for this visit…. I assume it is a visit?” Tayree asked, to make sure he understood her.

“Yes, a year at the most.”

“And the purpose of this visit, My Lady?” asked Josemy.

“For you to teach them things to improve our kingdom…. I saw the gardens and food plantations you have during my visit. I had never seen anything more healthy and big before. Our plants only grow to half the size of yours. Could you teach us how to plant using the elfin ways?”

“Yes, My Princess,” replied Tayree, quite surprised.

“Would it be possible to learn better ways to protect my kingdom?”

“I believe that can be done, Lady Amaria,” answered Josemy, with a reserved glance toward Tayree.

“I ask for no secrets from your people, just a chance to do better when we protect our own.”

“We understand,” Tayree said. “How many people do you think to send, My Lady?”

“Six, eight or ten … perhaps.”

“Have you considered that a year is a long time for a man to be without his family?” queried Josemy.

“No, I have not. Thank you…. Like I said, I just thought of it last night. You’re right, I could be asking for trouble if I send only men.”

She had seen the way she-elfs were cared for. She also knew that her men would not respect the she-elfs as such, if they were in need of a girl’s company. This could lead to a very big disaster if she was not careful. Another misunderstanding with the elfs was not acceptable.

“I’ll send only married couples,” she finally said and smiled at them. “I can’t promise that my men will be perfect. But I have thought of a few good ones, well behaved and with open minds.”

“That is all we can ask from you, My Lady,” said Tayree with a broad smile.
